2016 Odd Time Jazz Fusion is the title of Gilbert's upcoming album with some songs are available for review now.
Reston, VA, March 25, 2016 (Newswire.com) - Gilbert Engle adds new music this month on newjazz.net with some odd time jazz fusion. Although still in the works, as of this release, seven recordings have been completed and the album is scheduled for completion in April, 2016.
If you are not familiar with odd times in music, also called odd or unusual meter, you can find it in jazz classics like Take Five by Paul Desmond, which organizes the rhythms five beats per meter. Meter is another word for time signature, which defines the groupings of rhythms. Most standard music rhythms are organized in swing times like 3 and 6 beats, or like most music, four beats per meter.

Odd meter creates a very different feel and can be recognized in classic rock songs like Black Dog from Led Zeppelin, the middle section of The Trees from Rush, and Frank Zappa's most difficult to perform compositions like Mogio and Dupree's Paradise. Even some rap music like Nastalgia by Andrew Huang features unusual meter. Some orchestral music like the second movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Pathetique, begins like a typical waltz, except for the unusual feature of a five over four time signature broken into two plus three beats per bar.
Although Gilbert has delved into the realm of odd time with his music before, this album is dedicated to building melodies and rhythms with this rare approach to music.
This album features Gilbert's standard line up of mid-Atlantic musicians Peter Fraize on tenor saxophone, Marc Capponi on keyboards, Mike Pryor on bass, Sean Peck on drums and Gilbert on Guitar. Gilbert's progress can be tracked on NewJazz.net as he builds his library of original music.
